The Development History of Dining Tables and Chairs

May 14, 2026

Dining tables and chairs are utensils used in dining, and the materials used are quite diverse. The standard height is 720mm-760mm. Dining tables and chairs are utensils used in daily life and social activities for sitting, reclining, and eating.

In the early days after liberation, dining tables and chairs were generally traditional Chinese eight-immortal tables and long benches, made of solid wood and using traditional Chinese mortise and tenon joints. In the 1960s and 70s, dining tables were mostly ordinary square tables or three-drawer tables, and dining chairs were the most basic backrest chairs or four-legged stools, still primarily made of durable, solid wood.

In the 1980s, round tables became more popular, and foldable "side-by-side" round tables appeared. The design of dining chairs became more sophisticated and varied. At the same time, panel furniture began to emerge, and modular furniture led the trend.

In the 1990s, the materials and styles of family dining tables and chairs became increasingly diverse. Panel furniture became widespread, and solid wood dining tables and chairs gradually decreased.
