Buying an outdoor tent

May 17, 2026

Camping tents should ideally be group equipment, owned by those who frequently participate and have a regular need for them. Newcomers can participate in some activities and gain experience before purchasing one based on their individual needs. When choosing a tent, consider its intended use, design, materials, wind resistance, capacity (how many people it can sleep on), and weight. Focus on the following key performance indicators: For waterproofing, a waterproof rating of 2000mm or higher is best; the higher the rating, the better the rain and wind protection. For breathability, choose tents with screens or doors at the front and back for better ventilation. Regarding size and height, choose according to the number of users; larger is better than smaller. The height should allow for upright or slightly stooped movement inside the tent, avoiding bending over or crouching. For durability, tent frames are mainly made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) and aluminum alloy; the latter is more durable but more expensive. Beginners can start with FRP. For weight, weigh weight against comfort based on your mode of travel (driving or hiking).

Consumers should choose tents with performance levels appropriate for their actual camping scenario and environmental needs. Referring to the national standard GB/Z 27735-2022 "Camping Tents", performance levels are divided into: Level 1, suitable for short-term use in clear weather; Level 2, suitable for general weather conditions (humid and windy); and Level 3, suitable for all weather conditions, such as mountaineering and exploration. For UV protection, pay attention to the UPF value; UPF>50 is the highest protection level. For waterproofing, pay attention to the fabric coating, such as PU coating; the higher the value, the better the waterproofing performance.

For family emergency reserves, tent selection should prioritize portability, durability, and quick setup. Choose an appropriate size based on family size and pay attention to basic protective performance such as waterproofing and wind resistance. In terms of structural design, automatic pop-up or snap-on frame tents are more conducive to quick setup; the frame should preferably be made of metal (such as aluminum alloy) and equipped with sufficient barbed tent pegs and guy lines to enhance stability. The fabric should be durable, the bottom should be thickened, and it should have breathable mesh. Store in a dry, ventilated, and dark place, and check and maintain it regularly.
